Our History

A rich heritage of Compassionate Care

Founded in 1805 by Mrs. Elizabeth Keir, the institution aimed to assist individuals in Edinburgh and later across Scotland who were unable to earn a living due to incurable diseases. Over the years, we provided financial aid through pensions and monetary gifts, funded by legacies, charitable donations, and investment returns. Administered by a dedicated team, including a manageress, treasurer, secretary, and committee of superintendence, we ensured that those in need received the assistance they required.

Subsequently, the Dunlop Cancer Fund, which had been established in 1879 to provide relief in their own homes to people suffering from cancer and other incurable illnesses, came under the management of the institution. In 1903, our dedication was recognised with a Royal Charter granted by King Edward VII, formalising our mission to provide financial assistance to individuals unable to work due to incurable illnesses, enabling them to remain in their own homes.

As times changed and medical advancements progressed, so did our organization. Recognizing the need to adapt to modern challenges, we sought a Supplementary Royal Charter from King Charles III. This allowed us to modernize our operations and criteria for support, reflecting the changing landscape of healthcare and social support.

Today, as The Royal Society for Home Support (RSHS), we remain committed to our original mission of providing essential support to individuals unable to work due to health reasons. While our name and methods may have evolved, our dedication to serving the community with compassion and integrity remains unwavering.
